Commentaires : A ten minute sketch inside a 30 minute TV comedy series had been expanded into a three hour musical. As a result, the first half and second halves were virtually two different shows. The whole thing was a muddle, but with its hugely talented cast, and its satire ranging from “Crossroads” to “Les Mis” and Starbucks to Sondheim, and with Victoria Wood and Julie Walters alternating in the lead role, it attracted an audience of fanatical supporters who roared with delight at every familiar gag and malfunctioning prop. In 2006 the show was completely re-written for a major UK tour, so that the entire show was now the “straight” musical performance of “Acorn Antiques”. Mrs Overall was played by Ria Jones and the tour received excellent notices and was felt to be much better for the changes. It is this revised version which is now regarded as the “real” show.
Presse : NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "A musical farce and a farsical musical...No Memorable numbers "
MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "A load of slack, self-indulgent rubbish."
PAUL TAYLOR for THE INDEPENDENT says, "I haven't laughed as helplessly since the day I heard Bernadette had closed at the Dominion. It's the supreme cheek of the endeavour that will irritate some people and exhilarate the rest of us."
BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Mischievous, good-natured, charming. But a comic masterpiece? Not really."

Betty Blue Eyes (2011-04-Novello Theatre-London)

Type de série: Original
Théâtre: Novello Theatre (Londres - Angleterre)
Durée : 5 mois 2 semaines
Nombre :
Première Preview : Saturday 19 March 2011
Première : Wednesday 13 April 2011
Dernière : Saturday 24 September 2011
Mise en scène : Richard Eyre
Chorégraphie : Stephen Mear
Producteur :
Avec : Sarah Lancashire (Joyce Chilvers), Reece Shearsmith (Gilbert Chilvers), Ann Emery (Mother Dear), Adrian Scarborough (Inspector Wormold), David Bamber (Dr Swaby), Jack Edwards (Henry Allardyce), Mark Meadows (Francis Lockwood), Annalisa Rossi (Princess Elizabeth), Dan Burton (Prince Phillip), Clare Machin, Laura Medforth, Gemma Wardle, Hollie Taylor
Commentaires : With an absolute top-drawer cast and production team, and with a superb animatronic pig (voiced by none less than Kylie Minogue) this was a perfectly timed show set in 1947 austerity Britain at the time of a Royal Wedding ... thus echoing 2011 Britain in a deep recession with the forthcoming Royal Wedding of William and Katharine.
Commentaires longs: It began previews on March 19th, which included a gala charity performance in aid of the Grenadier Guards and in the presence of the Duke of Edinburgh. It was reported that the Prince and the attending guardsmen all laughed heartily throughout the show. With just a few dissenting voices, the show received mostly very good notices praising the excellent performances, memorable score and excellent choreography. However, it simply failed to catch on with the public and was taken off on September 24th.
Presse : "Superbly endearing and entertaining show"
Charles Spencer for The Daily Telegraph

"It's a production with heart and an unusual mix of gentleness and naughtiness."
Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standrad

"Musicals these days are constantly being based on movies. But this witty and delightful adaptation of the 1984 film A Private Function strikes me as better than the original."
Michael Billington for The Guardian

Presse : "If there are angels up there, please answer my prayers and ensure this transfers." Dominic Cavendish for The Telegraph

"Even if it’s not a perfect show, the presentation is immaculate. Robert Jones’s design is backed by a sky-scraping pile of manuscripts, suggesting the travails of the lone writer. The performances are also excellent ..." Michael Billington for The Guardian

"There is plenty to delight eye and ear in Josie Rourke’s production but I must say I became bored of it long before the end." Quentin Letts for The Daily Mail

"At times the score strays towards frantic pastiche and the storytelling is a bit too ingenious for its own good. But this is a smart, seductive and often very funny show." Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

Gigi (2008-08-Open Air Theatre, Regent's Park-London)

Type de série: Revival
Théâtre: Open Air Theatre, Regent's Park (Londres - Angleterre)
Durée : 1 mois
Nombre :
Première Preview : Wednesday 06 August 2008
Première : Thursday 14 August 2008
Dernière : Saturday 13 September 2008
Mise en scène : Timothy Sheader
Chorégraphie : Stephen Mear

Avec : Lisa O'Hare (Gigi), Chaim Topol (Honoré), Thomas Borchert (Gaston), Millicent Martin (Mamita), Linda Thorson (Alicia), Paul Bentley (Dufresne), Amy Ellen Richardson (Liane), Richard Pettyfer (Manuel), David Lucas (Duclos)
Commentaires : This revival had one of the most illustrious casts possible: Topol, world famous for his Tevye in “Fiddler on the Roof”, Thomas Borchert, the leading star of the German and Austrian musical theatre, Linda Thorson, the Avengers girl, and Millicent Martin (all-time favourite, last seen in “Frasier”) together with the already experienced but relative newcomer, Lisa O’Hare, “a star in the making if ever there was” (Sun newspaper). With excellent choreography and with an exciting production from the new artistic director of Regent’s Park, this was very warmly received.
Presse : LIZ HOGGARD for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Witty, camp, extremely entertaining."
MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "If the musical stands up well in Regent's Park, it is because of the easy familiarity of the Lerner and Loewe songs and because Timothy Sheader's production is cast from exceptional strength."

Commentaires : Avec Imelda Staunton
Presse : "Kent’s revival offers the unrepeatable chance to witness Imelda Staunton give one of the performances of her career." Dominic Cavendish for The Telegraph

Version 12

Hello, Dolly! (2009-08-Open Air Theatre, Regent's Park-London)

Type de série: Revival
Théâtre: Open Air Theatre, Regent's Park (Londres - Angleterre)
Durée : 1 mois
Nombre :
Première Preview : Thursday 30 July 2009
Première : Monday 10 August 2009
Dernière : Saturday 12 September 2009
Mise en scène : Timothy Sheader
Chorégraphie : Stephen Mear
Producteur :
Avec : Samantha Spiro (Dolly Levi), Ian Bartholomew (Horace Vandergelder) , Josefina Gabrielle (Irene Molloy), Daniel Crossley (Cornelius Hackl), Oliver Brenin (Barnaby Tucker), Akiya Henry (Minnie Fay), Mark Anderson (Ambrose), Clare Louise Connolly, Andy Hockley, John Stacy, Annalisa Rossi, Kevin Brewis
Commentaires : This was a greatly praised revival, with much acclaim for Samantha Spiro, but it was the production itself and the brilliant choreography of Stephen Mear that captured most of the notices. Everyone remarked on the brilliant waiters’ dance and especially the sequence where the cast becomes a steam train, a top hat turns into a chimney, and boaters turn into whirling wheels – described as a moment of “theatrical genius”.
Presse : HENRY HITCHING'S FOR THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Stephen Mear’s crisp choreography and Timothy Sheader’s pacy, clear direction ensure that this is a buoyant production."
PAUL VALE for THE STAGE says, "vivacious, colourful production."
KAT BROWN for THE LONDON PAPER says, "Beautifully staged production."
BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "It’s really rather wonderful...On opening night it began to rain, leaving me to wonder if Hello, Dolly! would morph too quickly into Bye-Bye Dolly. But no one noticed or cared. It was all too tuneful, too bright, too much fun to be stopped by English wetness."
MAXIE SZALWINSKA for THE INDEPENDENT says, "Jerry Herman's nostalgia-fest of a musical is big, brash and silly, forever teetering on the brink of saccharine. Timothy Sheader's staging offers a pure jolt of light relief, carefully building up audience goodwill with its pretty, sometimes striking stage pictures."
MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "Fresh and likable revival."

Producteur :
Presse : "A lengthy but slick show with high production values."
Fiona Mountford for The Evening Standard

"Though it is the effervescent wit of Cole Porter’s songs, with their insolently ingenious double and triple rhymes and unforgettable melodies, that are the star attraction, Sam and Bella Spewack’s book crackles with comic energy and great one-liners, while also finding moments of tenderness and hurt amid the dizzy joie-de-vire...Frankly, nights at the theatre don’t often come more enjoyable than this."
Charles Spencer for The Daily Telegraph

"This talent-packed production has all the right ingredients – but falls short of excellence."
Ian Shuttleworth for The Financial Times

Version 20

On the Town (2005-03-Coliseum Theatre-London)

Type de série: Revival
Théâtre: Coliseum Theatre (Londres - Angleterre)
Durée : 2 mois 2 semaines
Nombre : 17 représentations
Première Preview : Saturday 05 March 2005
Première : Thursday 10 March 2005
Dernière : Saturday 28 May 2005
Mise en scène : Jude Kelly
Chorégraphie : Stephen Mear
Producteur :
Avec : Willard W. White (Workman), Helen Anker (Ivy Smith), Caroline O’Connor (Hildegarde Esterhazy), Lucy Schauffer (Clair DeLoon), Timothy Howar (Ozzie), Aaron Lazar (Gabey), Adam Garcia (Chip Offenbloch), Andrew Shore (Judge), Janine Duvitski (Lucy), Sylvia Syms, Alison Jiear, Rodney Clarke, Greg Winter, Tom Dwyer
Commentaires : With the exception of the veteran Willard W. White in a very small role, the cast for this show did not contain any of the ENO’s regular company, and, primarily, was a dance show rather than a singing show. This raised a lot of questions as to why the country’s National “opera” should be presenting a show performed by imported West End singers and dancers, and should have installed a £100,000 sound system for just 17 performances. However, everyone agreed it was a worthwhile revival after more than 40 years, and it proved highly popular, selling out the enormous Coliseum with no difficulty.
Presse : Independent: "On the Town is bang on the money"
Music & Vision: "Sex and art"
ConcertoNet (English): "The young things could all have learnt a trick or two from the old hands"
Financial Times: "It is about time ENO started to cash in on the market for musicals"
The Observer: "Bernstein's On the Town hasn't been staged for years for good reason"
Musical Pointers: "A curious choice for an important ENO production"
The Times: "Dramatic clichés don’t make a show"
Guardian Unlimited: "An evening uneven in tone and inspiration"
Music OMH: "The result is electric"

Version 21

Mise en scène : Jude Kelly
Chorégraphie : Stephen Mear
Producteur :
Avec : Helen Anker (Ivy Smith), Caroline O’Connor (Hildegarde Esterhazy), Lucy Schauffer (Clair DeLoon), Ryan Molloy (Ozzie), Joshua Dallas (Gabey), Sean Palmer ( Chip Offenbloch), Andrew Shore/Graeme Danby (Judge), Janine Duvitski (Lucy), June Whitfield (Madame Dilly), Rodney Clarke (Master of Ceremonies), Alison Jiear, Julia Hinchcliffe
Commentaires : In 2005 when this revival was first staged, there was some fuss about whether the country’s National “opera” should be presenting a Broadway “musical”. Any doubts were answered by sell-out shows and the ENO having to stage extra performances to meet the demand for tickets. This was a straight-forward revival of that earlier success, with some cast changes – especially the three principal sailors, and the introduction of June Whitefield into the small but telling role as the deliciously tipsy Madame Dilly. One or two critics continued to moan about the suitability of this show at an “opera house”, but overall it was highly praised and once more a total sell-out.

Presse : "Watching Richard Eyre’s joyful production of this musical comedy, with music and lyrics by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross and a punchy book by the Broadway legend George Abbott and Richard Bissell, it often feels like one of the most zingingly entertaining tune-and-toe shows you have ever seen. " Charles Spencer for The Daily Telegraph

"It's a big leap from the Minerva in Chichester to the Shaftesbury, but Richard Eyre's joyous production of this 1954 musical effortlessly expands to fill the space." Michael Billington for The Guardian

Commentaires : This was a visiting production from the West Yorkshire Playhouse, notable for the use of three screens and computer graphics for some of the filmed sequences, for the well-handled “rain” sequence, but, above all, for the much-praised choreography by Stephen Mear. The production returned to play the Christmas season at the Olivier with the same principal cast.

Soul Train (1999-06-Victoria Palace Theatre-London)

Durée : 2 mois 2 semaines
Nombre :
Première Preview : Wednesday 16 June 1999
Première : Tuesday 22 June 1999

Chorégraphie : Stephen Mear
Producteur :
Avec : Sharon Benson, Jacqui Boatswain, Sheila Ferguson, C. Gerod Harris, Danny John-Jules, Melanie E Marshall, Karen McSween, David Obinyan, Jason Pennycooke, Colin Roy, Vanessa Smith
Commentaires : Another “jukebox” musical with hardly any plot - this offered some 47 songs (or bits of songs) - and was ostensibly a dramatised history of soul music, starting with a church-type gospel choir who then rip off their cassocks to reveal sequinned dresses, and illustrate the story with video projections of the Ku Klux Klan and the Vietnam War. It was described as a “lazy, ramshackle and short-lived excuse for a show”, but a superbly sung and performed celebration of black music. It closed after just ten weeks.
Presse : THE EVENING STANDARD says, "Soul Train may be a lazy, ramshackle and short-lived excuse for a show, but the soul itself is immortal."

THE SUNDAY TIMES says "Uplifting party fare for anyone who keeps a copy of The Blues Brothers next to the home VCR."

THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "I'm afraid Soul Train is just another bog-standard compilation show with none of the ingenuity of Mamma Mia!"

THE FINANCIAL TIMES says, "Even that shameless exercise in exploitation. The Blues Brothers stage show, has more plot than Soul Train.

Presse : "The show sharply captures the mood and atmosphere of the early Sixties, in which formality, snobbery and deference were giving way to greater freedom."
Charles Spencer for The Telegraph

"... uneven musical play ..."
Paul Taylor for The Independent

" ... we never get to fully understand Ward's character ..."
Michael Billington for The Guardian

"... like a very unsexy production of Chicago. The girls look great but half the cast really should have kept their clothes on."
Simon Edge for The Daily Express

"Ward is the narrator for his own story, and ... we get frustratingly little sense of what drove this complex man."
Fiona Mountford for The Evening Standard

Commentaires : This was yet another in the sequence of scaled-down musicals at the Menier Chocolate Factory which received excellent notices and would go on to future life in the West End itself. The show was notable for the excellent performance by Tamzin Outhwaite (best known for playing Mel in “Eastenders”). It was also the first to have the same actor, Mark Umbers, play all three of Charity’s love interests. The show transferred to the Theatre Royal Haymarket on May 4 th (previews from April 23 rd ) and ran for six months, closing on November 6 th.

Presse : "The music is consistently as atmospheric and tuneful as Stephen Mear’s choreography, though much indebted to the great Bob Fosse, is crisp and lively....It is fun, fun fun. . " The Times

"The show itself is a joy. From the moments you hear the bleary, brassy opening notes of the show’s most famous number, Hey Big Spender, one knows — as the song promises — that one is in for a good time. The band handles Cy Coleman’s outstanding jazzy score with superb panache throughout. The cast do splendid justice to Dorothy Fields’s witty and often touching lyrics and Neil Simon’s gag-filled script, in which he largely avoids the mushy sentimentality that is so often his downfall. " Charles Spencer for The Daily Telegraph

"Comes up trumps . " Mark Shenton for The Stage

"This is an ingratiating, exuberant show with some gorgeous balletic moments and a winning vitality. " Henry Hitchings for The Evening Standard

Tonight's the Night (2003-11-Victoria Palace Theatre-London)

Théâtre: Victoria Palace Theatre (Londres - Angleterre)
Durée : 11 mois
Nombre :
Première Preview : Wednesday 15 October 2003

Commentaires : This was another of Ben Elton’s catalogue shows, wrapping a story around a series of hit songs. Even before it opened it was being referred to as “We Will Rod You”. Just like “We Will Rock You”, the critics hated this show, describing it as written on the back of an envelope while waiting for the kettle to boil. With top-price tickets at £55, it was rapidly known as “We Will Rob You”. However, perhaps aware of how wrong they were over the Freddie Mercury tribute, this time most critics were able to praise the music, the choreography and the songs, whilst hating the thin story, smutty humour, gratuitous gay banter and crude sexual stereotyping. The show ran for eleven months.
Presse : LYN GARDNER for THE GUARDIAN says, "A little gaudy, bawdy, over-amplified entertainment."

BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, "Pretty dim stuff, not helped by less-than-lively dialogue....but we still get some ebullient tunes."

NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD says, "A book of flamboyant silliness that interferes with the pleasure of hearing Rod Stewart's biggist hits.."

ADAM SCOTT for THE INDEPENDENT says, "The songs serve the plot. And what a lot of service it needs."

SARAH HEMMING for THE FINANCIAL TIMES says, "Ben Elton's script is cheerfully daft...."

Première Preview : Saturday 24 June 2000
Première : Tuesday 18 July 2000

Mise en scène : Eric Schaeffer
Chorégraphie : Bob Avian • Stephen Mear
Producteur :
Avec : Ian McShane (Daryll Van Horne), Lucie Arnaz (Alexandra Spofford), Joanna Riding (Jane Smart), Maria Friedman (Sukie Rougemont), Rosemary Ashe (Felicia Gabriel), Stephen Tate (Clyde Gabriel), Caroline Sheen (Jennifer Gabriel), Peter Jöback (Michael Spofford), Gee Williams (Fidel), Sarah Lark (Little Girl), Jasna Ivir (Gina Marino), Tim Walton (Joe Marino), Anne Marie McCormack (Gretta Neff), Kevin Wainwright (Raymond Neff), Lisa Peace (Marge Persley), Shaun Henson (Homer Persley), Earl Carpenter (Reverend Ed Parsley), Kathryn Akin (Brenda Parsley), Jocelyn Hawkyard (Rebecca Barnes), Nick Searle (Toby Bergman), Valda Aviks (Eudora Bryce), Matt Dempsey (Curtis Hallerbread), Scarlett Strallen (Mavis Jessup), Julia Sutton (Franny Lovecraft), Chris Holland (Frank Ogden), Alison Forbes (Mabel Ogden), Maurice Lane (Dr Henry Pattison), Jean McGlynn (Marcy Wills)
Commentaires : Based on John Updike’s novel and the film version starring Jack Nicholson, the musical version initially earned mostly positive reviews, but failed to fill the vast Drury Lane auditorium. After seven months it was replaced with a scaled-down version and moved to the more intimate Prince of Wales Theatre. A number of scenes were re-written and the song “Who's the Man?1” was replaced with a rousing gospel number, “The Glory of Me”. At the same time Ian McShane left and was replaced by his understudy, Earl Carpenter. At the end of its first year a general cast change saw Clarke Peters take over as Darryl van Home and Josefina Gabrielle and Rebecca Thornhill replaced Lucie Arnaz and Maria Friedman. On Oct 27th, 2001 the show closed after a 15 month run. There had been a disastrous drop in ticket sales, attributed to a downturn in tourism following the September 11th Twin-Towers attack in New York.
Presse : SHERIDAN MORLEY for TELETEXT says, "This is in every possible sense a magical show; written, composed, choreographed, designed, directed and played to within inches of perfection." He goes on to say, " The Witches of Eastwick is the musical that starts the 21st century, and it will be a hard act to follow."

EDWARD SECKERSON for THE INDEPENDENT, says "The enjoyment factor is high, the production values sky-high." He goes on to say it is a "likeable and beautifully mounted show".

MATT WOLF for REUTERS/VARIETY, also generally liked the show, saying, "As long as its leading ladies join forces vocally, not to mention aerially, the show flies.. As it happens, that's often enough to keep director Eric Schaeffer's production mostly airborne, despite some dead patches in the second act and a game if underpowered leading man..... When he's not attempting to sing or dance, McShane cuts an attractive roue who matches up perfectly to the ``bearish, dark man'' described in Updike's novel."

BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES, says, "Dana P. Rowe's music remains refreshingly tuneful, whether it opts for the energetic and brash or for the soft and slightly soppy. John Dempsey's rhymes are never feeble or silly, though seldom very clever. But I caught myself wishing for a dash of Sondheim or Weill, a pinch more toughness and acerbity, along with the fingernails and frogs in the witches' brew."

NICHOLAS DE JONGH for THE EVENING STANDARD gave the show a mixed review saying, "Of the 20 songs, some inspiring frenetic choreography by Bob Avian and Stephen Mear, just one, the witty Dirty Laundry, boasts the impact of a hit. And Maria Friedman also plays powerful, poignant vocal gymnastics in Words, Words Words. But though Rowe's score achieves snatches of symphonic excitement and drama, this is a musical where the scenes between songs and music provide most of the fun and amusement."

ROBERT HEWISON for THE SUNDAY TIMES says,"There are many things to be enjoyed in The Witches of Eastwick."

MICHAEL BILLINGTON for THE GUARDIAN says, "Devil of a good sex fantasy set to music." He goes on to say "Ian McShane as the devil may not have all the best tunes but, after a long absence from the stage, he overflows with energy and a leering, saloon bar smuttiness." Billington goes on to say that "Maria Friedman is outstanding...Joanna Riding is also sharply funny."

SUSANNAH CLAPP for the OBSERVER says, "It's a bubbling cauldron, but it's not spellbinding. The Witches of Eastwick, the catchy and colourful new musical production from Sir Cameron Mackintosh, has lots to recommend it. What it lacks is an original pulse, and a dynamic leading man."

CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, "WHAT a relief. After a string of duds this year, the West End finally has a new musical worth making a song and dance about."

On Oct 27th, 2001 the show closed after a 15 month run. There had been a disastrous drop in ticket sales, attributed to a downturn in tourism following the September 11th Twin-Towers attack in New York.
Presse : Most of the popular press like the new version better than the original... BENEDICT NIGHTINGALE for THE TIMES says, “The show has been somewhat rejigged…… I thought the music was still bright and brisk, if not acerbic or inventive enough, the lyrics remained above-average, and the repartee funnier than I recalled.”

CHARLES SPENCER for THE DAILY TELEGRAPH says, “Now it has transferred to the smaller Prince of Wales, McShane has been replaced by the great Clarke Peters, and The Witches of Eastwick looks like a brimmingly confident smash hit.” THE DAILY MAIL says, “Did I enjoy it more this time round? Well, yes, actually. Not a lot, but a bit. “

THE EVENING STANDARD says, "This comic operetta has been given a shot in the erogenous zones through its casting of Clarke Peters as the devilish seducer....Eric Schaeffer’s production bustles with ardent singing, dancing brio and broad humour."

SHERIDAN MORLEY for TELETEXT says, "It still looks, a year on, like work in progress and that is what gives it such fascination: in here somewhere are about five quite different musicals."

ROBERT HEWISON for THE SUNDAY TIMES says, "Josefina Gabrielle, Joanna Riding and Rebecca Thornhill are warm and sexy." He goes on to say, Clarke Peters is "entertaining", but "what had been a musical comedy has become a comedy musical".

RHODA KOENIG for THE INDEPENDENT was not too impressed saying, “After his promising entrance, Peters turns out to be about as sexy and subversive as Burt Reynolds trying to embarrass a female guest on a chat show.”

Commentaires longs: The authors made numerous changes to the show. Numbers were abbreviated (Eastwick Knows), cut (I Love A Little Town) and added (Your Wildest Dreams). Scenes and songs were re-arranged, and the production received positive notices.
Presse : The Washington Post reviewer wrote that "The musical adaptation has way more kick than the wispy 1987 film…. It's on the technical level that [Eric Schaeffer]'s production still has kinks to work out, for until the actresses are airborne… the mechanics look and feel clunky." BroadwayWorld.com stated that "director Eric Schaeffer certainly pulls The Witches of Eastwick all together… does it ever succeed." CultureVulture.net commented that the show is "full of body-shaking thunder, raunchy behavior, and surprises. Gut reaction based on the performance seen June 17 says this show will make it to Broadway and be reasonably successful there." Talkin' Broadway wrote that the "Broadway actors… give memorable and funny performances in the four lead roles…. Choreographer Karma Camp gets a chance to show off in this production."
